More and more people need to realise that they are not doing anyone a favour by running a business.
The customer is the most important entity in any business and hence it is very important that they are treated as King at all times.
The temptation to hit and run is really high, but smart business men do not do hit and run. They hit you, gather feedback and hit you harder. Wise businessmen have learnt over the years that it is much easier to sell something to someone who has bought from you before than a new customer.
A customer in your hand if treated very well is worth a dozen.
You treat your customers well and they become your walking billboard, ready to recruit new people into the fold.
This strategy is at the heart of Amazon and Virgin group. Jeff Bezos at Amazon makes it clear that his passion is to delight his customers as much as possible and offering lower prices, yet continuously making the services better and better is one brilliant way Amazon is going about it. Richard Branson at Virgin Group makes similiar arguments, he says if he does a good job at Virgin Altlantic, you would also like to bank with him at Virgin Bank, and patronise his other companies.
I then do not understand why various companies, Nigerian telecommunication companies in general somehow think they are doing me a favour by offering telephony services that are for the most part crappy. I still maintain my stand that if by some miracle, a new Telco opens shop today and demonstrates that they really care about their customers, offer good services and actually protect us from the 100 spam SMS and calls we receive everyday. It should be game over for the current players.
People should not patronise your business because they have to, they should do business with you because they want to.
If you cannot put your customers first and delight them, then perhaps you should close shop and go home. When you are running a business, run it properly, you are not doing anybody a favour.
