Unlike the earliest communication tools of the digital era, things like email, WWW, SMS and the likes, nowadays, our tools are just too closed for comfort. If some crazy hacker woke up tomorrow morning and destroyed all Facebook data and back up data across the world, I would lose all the memory I had built up there over time.
Crazy!
I am a long fan of keeping things open. I know we need to monetise these things and get to announce how we are now billionaires and then, in order to stay ahead, we need to keep the technology behind our work super secret. However, we need to re-evaluate and re-think about some deeper things: If Whatsapp or BBM gets banned in Nigeria today, it would disrupt a lot of things, but it should not be like that.
Can we do better??
