Power play

Well, it is certainly not news that Nigeria is generating so little power.

This website reports that there are currently 23 grid-connected generating plants in operation in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), with a total installed capacity of 10,396.0 MW and available capacity of 6,056 MW. Recent news suggest that power generation has slumped, it actually even went totally flat on Thursday, March 31, 2016 at exactly 12.58pm and this persisted for about three hours.

Our power generation is around 3,000 MW on our best days, so that the nation has to ration power and several areas of the nation are not even on the grid yet. By 2020, projection says we would need between 9,000 MW and 16,000 MW.

I found this news from Germany interesting and that is why I am writing this post: On Sunday, May 8, Germany hit a new high in renewable energy generation, they generated so much power that for several hours, commercial customers were being paid to consume electricity!

Germany produced about 63 GW on sunday, with 87% of that figure (55 GW) coming from renewable sources.

I know, you will say that is Germany and then you log off.

The fact is that the Germans do not have extra brain cells. I strongly believe that Nigerians can do better, we can fix this power supply problem if we put our hearts into it.

Currently, I am not convinced that we are doing all we can to fix this.

The only business opportunity here is not to import generators! Biko! We can do so much more… We need to do something about this power generation issue. This is the most important problem my generation can solve, so that our children can enjoy a better life than we did.
