Google has always been one company I admire a lot. I like the founders; Larry Page and Sergey Brin, they simply do not see any need to follow conventions or norms. They simply look out for what needs to get done and they get it done.
Yesterday’s announcement that they where creating Alphabet Inc and converting Google as-we-know-it into just one of the companies under the new umbrella company was a really surprising move for everybody. Only very few people could have honestly seen it coming.
What is Alphabet? Well, Alphabet is mostly a collection of companies. The largest of which, of course, is currently Google. The biggest change this brings about is that Larry is now freed up from the shackles of the powerful Google brand, as far as he is concerned G is just for Google, he has 25 other letters to play with assuming the 26 letters of the alphabet are actually enough for his grand ambitions.
Larry Page has always maintained that we do not have any existing model for the kind of company they want to run and now they are trying to make their vision happen.
All entrepreneurs have to be ready to keep evolving their business or they will lose their place. A lot of brilliant entrepreneurs over the years have allowed themselves to be boxed into a corner and by failing to keep moving, they get sidetracked and then the whole thing collapses. Larry Page and Google seemingly have avoided that fate now by bailing out to establish Alphabet Inc.
