Kunle Afolayan and not fitting into the mould

Regardless of who we are or what we do, there is always a mould we are expected to fit into. A way we have to go about our business, a general counsel on how things ought to be.

Most of us even fit into such without even questioning.

I have been recently following up Kunle Afolayan, the multi award winning Nigerian movie producer’s latest project: THE CEO. In a Nigerian movie industry where anything goes, it is interesting to see a man like Kunle Afolayan refusing to fit into the mould of what Nigerian movies should look like and how they should be handled.

In his own words:

“The CEO represents Africa as a continent. By virtue of the kind of story, the actors, the team and every element of the film to a large extent, embraces who we are as Africans. Some people are very comfortable in making low-quality products because for them it is only a means of livelihood, for them they only make money.”

The budget for THE CEO movie is said to be around $1 Million (That would be more than ₦300m), with actors from across the African continent.

He is even taking things a step further by announcing that the movie premiere will be done at 35,000 feet in the air; on board a Air France trip from Lagos to Paris on June 1, 2016. In case you are wondering, it is not a normal move, it might even be the first of its kind.

I do not have to join the mass that specialises in making low-quality products.

I do not have to also follow the trail of mediocrity that everyone around me is leading.

I do not have to fit into any existing mould. Yes! I can (and should) hold myself to higher standards.

P.S.

I had planned to make today’s post my commentary about the whole fuel prices wahala and NLC’s planned strike action and all that. But then I decided not to fit into the mould and so, I did a different post instead.
