Only the best parts of the story

When we read all these books and auto biographies about how someone did something and how awesome they sound, we also really need to bear in mind that they are only telling us the best parts of the story.

When the public speakers mount the podium and share personal stories, they are all doctored.

We cannot safely listen to a speaker and then conclude that he has indeed shared with us everything that led to his successful endeavors. Many have done things they might not be particularly proud of and will conveniently leave out those aspects of the story.

A man once told me that he doesn’t think there are many true scandal-free rich men in Nigeria. He maintains that not so many people can honestly recount how they went from nothing to the first N1 Million. However, we sit down and these same people hold seminars on how brilliance, hardwork, integrity and all the other usual factors helped them to make it big and that it can help us too.

Listen to their stories and learn what you can, but never assume they told you everything. Never assume that is what they really did to become successful.
