About 5 years ago (around 2012-ish), I received a call about helping to build out a new web platform. A client had referred me to this new person and after he saw some of my personal projects, he was convinced I could deliver.
Then we held the meeting… and then something became clear to me during our meeting: this man had no interest or passion in working on this platform.
He simply wanted to hire me to build a working platform for him so that he could sell it to a bigger corporate body… just like those smaller startups selling out to bigger corporations, pocketing a few million in the process.
Brilliant plan?
Anyways, its been 5 years, he is yet to sell anything.
He is still looking for the magic idea he will sell that will change everything. He keeps thinking that his big break is just around the corner.
He wants to win the sell-to-a-big-company lottery jackpot! Woah!!
Some people build businesses around government contracts or pitching projects to bigger companies to buy them up. Don’t be that guy!
Build your company around innovation.
Build your company around solving a defined problem for a defined target audience and plan to make money from your solution.
Think about how you can start, and then scale up from there.
What this man never realised is that companies don’t just buy up startups like that. All the companies you hear about buy up startups that are up and running, with proof of traction already.
You cannot fake the amount of work needed to build an app to the stage whereby it can be acquired for a decent sum.
You need to go all in if you will make any impact with your innovative ideas.
Half-hearted work won’t deliver desired results.
My bottomline: If you are not trying to build a big business around innovation and excellence, we cannot be friends.
You cannot join my inner circle.
