A few days ago, one of my interns asked me why our week could not be more “well structured” with very very clearly defined themes for each day and all that.
I smiled. He had a point, now, its not like things are crazy and disorganised at my HQ, never! However… he was missing the point and so I enlightened him a bit.
Look, schooling and most formal learning structures are too organised to produce people who can fit into the chaos of real life instantly.
While training and curriculum are well organised at most institutions, life does not have an order in which it throws things at you.
The work we really do is to make sense out of the chaos that comes up every day… real life is messy and we have to learn how to keep our head and create some space for us to make impact.
About two (2) days ago, during the night, one of our dozens of web servers went down, taking down key websites and for the next 8 to 10 hours, we were simultaneously working on it while communicating with our clients and keeping them updated. When I went to bed the previous evening, I had no clue that life would toss such a storm my way…
While fixing all that, we had to ensure development work had to continue on other client projects in order to ensure we meet already tight deadlines.
In one word: crazy day.
Now, how do we place that into a curriculum??
