Changing trends

The world is changing, our culture, languages and even belief systems are all constantly changing. This is one of the main reasons why I encourage people to keep watching the world.

They say there is nothing new under the sun, yet I found this story quite interesting, in Spain, there is a comedy club that now charges people based on how well they enjoyed the show. This got my head buzzing in all sorts of directions. The business owners had to come up with this innovation because of an increase in government tax which reduced the number of people attending shows.

For years, software companies have battled piracy. In fact, Microsoft once said the biggest competitor to their Windows operating system was pirated Windows and not OS X or the Linux contingent. The method of selling softwares have now changed radically also, most software companies now ensure they have a free functional version anyone can use and then offer paid upgrade for professionals.

Autodesk, makers of AutoCAD, Maya and more have now announced that all their software will now be free for schools and students everywhere. The truth is that in this modern times, charging certain classes of people for software just does not make sense and as such, Autodesk has updated its business model.

One more trend: people do not want to buy things again. Why buy when I can get it on demand? This is the idea that has made music and movie streaming work. This is why car sharing services are springing up. If people do not want to buy stuff any more, then we too must build services that takes this fact into consideration and use it to our advantage.

Are you still running with the business model that is 50 years old? What about taking some time to ponder over how all this shift in culture and thinking is negatively affecting your business model and looking at how to make the most of it.

Avoid the temptation to hold on stubbornly to yesterday’s ideas. Would you shut down the Internet to keep the libraries open and relevant? Some people would, and I am not joking.

The trends are changing, are you?
