One of the most important questions that a business owner must be able to answer is “Who is your customer?”. This is a very fundamental question that will determines how things will play out in the business.
Many people do not really know who their customer is, the customer remains vague.
At the early stage of your business, your target customers must be highly detailed and specific. The more specific you are, the better your chances of building a business that will truly cater for their needs and that way, convincing them to adopt your services will be easier.
At the early stages of Facebook, they focused on students. They were strictly student only, when they grew big, they then had enough resources to focus on everybody in the world.
If you are starting a school, design it with a set of parents/kids in mind. Are you catering for poor parents who cannot afford to pay high fees for their children’s schooling? Are you catering for the successful family that has NO TIME for their kids? By being focused on a particular type of customer, you will greatly increase your chances of success.
Until you have clearly defined your business’s target audience, you do not have a business because there is no way you can really build a remarkable business that will not be generic without first deciding on the kind of people you are hoping to attract.
Getting clear on who your customer is also greatly helps you with the marketing. It is much easier to market your business when you have a specific set of people in mind than when you are trying to cater for everybody.
Our time and resources are not infinite, we should not waste it by running after everybody in sight. Define your customer, then run after them with everything you have got!
